Wood Finishing Styles | Ideas for Farmhouse Collection

A farmhouse style is timeless, gorgeous, and can now be incredibly affordable. Many well-known retailers sell farmhouse styled furniture but they come at a cost. It is easier on your wallet and more fun for you to create your own kind of farmhouse furniture to place in your home or office space. There are multiple ways to get a farmhouse wood finish, as well as a weathered finish, which fits with the farmhouse style.

Farmhouse Finish Option 1

  1. Start with a water-based or oil-based stain and apply it to the piece of furniture with either a rag or a paint brush.
  2. Apply some crackle coat, or even Elmer’s glue works as well – this allows the base coat to still show through. Allow it to dry. It also does not need to be applied to the whole piece.
  3. Paint the board with paint – some do white or grey. You can use either acrylic latex or a chalky finish; the chalky finish is easier to sand/distress. Once again, the paint does not need to be applied completely to the piece, it can be light and patchy in certain areas. As the paint dries, the crackling will begin to appear.
  4. Once the top coat has officially dried, use sandpaper and sand it over.
  5. Apply a seal of your choice to the piece

 Farmhouse Finish Option 2

  1. Start by staining the furniture piece, using either a rag or a paint brush
  2. Once the stain is dry, apply some paint. It does not need to cover every bit of the piece
  3. After the paint is dry to the touch, begin sanding with either steel wool or sandpaper – both pieces have different results
  4. Using a sander can also result in some ‘wear and tear’ for the piece
  5. Apply a seal of your choice
  6. Like the previous option, you can apply paint if you want to add some color

Comparing Prices

On unfinishedfurnitureexpo.com, you can find a 4-drawer dresser for $369.95 and it comes with free shipping. All you have to do is order it, assemble it, and then finish it the way you want. On another site that sells farmhouse furniture, you can find a finished 4-drawer dresser for $2,200 and it does come with free shipping. In the long run, it helps your wallet when you purchase an unfinished piece and the supplies to finish it separately. It also allows you to get creative.

With a farmhouse style, your house will be timeless and cozy, all without breaking your bank. Applying a farmhouse finish is similar to applying a weathered finish so you cannot go wrong when looking for the right way to finish your furniture. With unfinished furniture, you can do any finish you want because it can go with any style you like. There are various other ways to apply this finish, using different stains and paint colors, which makes the process even more creative.
